The website of the online citizen participation for the development of the area "Am Alten Güterbahnhof" was awarded with the polis Award 2021!
Joy in Duisburg: The website of the online citizen participation for the development of the area "Am Alten Güterbahnhof" was awarded with the polis Award 2021. In the category "Communicative Urban Design", the innovative participation process, which took place completely online due to corona, was able to assert itself against four other nominated projects and initiatives (including from Berlin, Leipzig and the Metropole Ruhr) and secured the 1st prize. The category looked for projects that involved citizens in urban development processes and encouraged them to help shape them, for example with a special planning game, dialog or workshop process.
Bernd Wortmeyer, Managing Director of GEBAG, is enthusiastic: "The online citizen participation for the area 'Am Alten Güterbahnhof' was an absolute pilot project - as far as we know, there has never been a comparable participation process in purely digital form in Germany before. We are very pleased that our courage and innovative spirit has now also been rewarded with an award and 1st prize at the polis Award - and take this as an incentive for our further work."
The jury justified its choice as follows: "The jury considers it exemplary the sensitivity with which the design of such a critical area is approached here. Those involved in the project have made a virtue out of necessity and, despite the lack of live events, have been able to capture a broad range of opinions from the population, which have been incorporated into the subsequent planning. The jury praised the fact that the online participation platform once again reached completely new target groups that might have been less active in classic formats."
Duisburg's Lord Mayor Sören Link is also pleased with the award: "Duisburg can set an example! The prize for online citizen participation is proof that our city can develop exemplary projects and lead the way with charisma and sustainable visions. I hope that our concept of online citizen participation will find many imitators - such a project must not remain unique in Germany!"
The online citizen participation was developed as part of a joint project group with participants from GEBAG and the City of Duisburg. The website was developed and implemented by the Dortmund agency Unternehmen Online. The online procedure accompanied the two-stage urban and open space planning competition for the development of the area "Am Alten Güterbahnhof", which was won by the team of CKSA Christoph Kohl Stadtplaner Architekten, Berlin, and Fugmann Janotta und Partner mbH, Berlin. The overall procedure was implemented and moderated by the office Faltin + Sattler from Düsseldorf.
The polis Award was presented on September 15, 2021, during the polis Convention in Düsseldorf. For six years now, the polis Award for Urban and Project Development has honored projects that make a contribution to the public good of a city beyond their own scope.
